File

In film photography photos are recorded onto light sensitive film. This is developed with special chemicals and a negative is produced. In digital photography photos are stored as a digital file. You need to decode the file in order to view it. There are different types of file formats used in digital photography. Some are lossy and some are lossless. The most common lossy file format used in digital photography is JPEG. The most common lossless file format used is TIFF. Increasingly becoming common are lossless RAW files.

DSLR

Stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex. This is the digital equivalent of a SLR camera. The difference between this and a traditional SLR is that a DSLR doesn’t need film. The photograph is recorded on a digital image sensor and saved onto a memory card.

Bokeh

Bokeh is a photography term that refers to the way a lens blurs an image.  Generally it is considered good practice, especially with potrait photography, to have the main subject in focus and the background blurred.
Bokeh refers to how evenly and pleasingly the out of focus (blurred) area looks.

Wide-Angle (lens)

A lens that has a shorter focal length and a wider field of view (includes more subject area) than a normal lens.

A wide-angle lens takes in a greater angle of view than a normal lens. This image was made with an ultra-wide 16 mm fisheye lens. Notice the curved horizon.

Frame

One individual picture on a roll of film. Also, tree branch, arch, etc., that frames a subject.

Film

A photographic emulsion coated on a flexible, transparent base that records images or scenes.

Candid

Unposed pictures of people, often taken without the subject’s knowledge. These usually appear more natural and relaxed than posed pictures.

Diaphragm

Lens opening. A perforated plate or adjustable opening mounted behind or between the elements of a lens used to control the amount of light that reaches the film. Openings are usually calibrated in f-numbers.

Darkroom

A lighttight area used for processing films and for printing and processing papers; also for loading and unloading film holders and some cameras.

CF

Compact Flash card. Used in a digital camera to record images. Storage space (as of the date of this post) ranges from 2GB up to 128GB.
