Zoetrope

A nineteenth century novelty device that exploited the phi phenomenon and the persistence of vision principle to create the illusion of movement when strips of sequential drawings were placed inside a rotating drum and viewed through a series of slits in the side of the drum.  Often thought of as a forerunner of modern motion-picture animation.
